The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) staged a dramatic walkout from an ongoing minimum wage negotiation meeting on Thursday.

This action was taken in protest against the Federal Government’s proposal of N48,000 as the new minimum wage for workers.

The NLC and TUC, during the May Day celebrations, had proposed a minimum wage of N615,000 for Nigerian workers, citing the high cost of living as the basis for their demand.

An insider within one of the labour centres disclosed that the Federal Government proposed N48,000 as the new minimum wage.

Additionally, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), which had earlier stated that the least paid worker in the private sector earns N78,000, surprisingly proposed N54,000 for the new minimum wage, much to the astonishment of the organised labour.

As of the time of this report, the NLC and TUC have convened an emergency press briefing to inform wwworkers of the Federal Government’s proposed minimum wage and to outline their next course of action.
