Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned on Wednesday, following the recommendation of his cabinet to dissolve the lower house of parliament Lok Sabha.

President Droupadi Murmu accepted Modi’s resignation along with that of the council of ministers. She requested Modi to continue as the prime minister until the formation of the new government, as per the protocol.

The Election Commission of India released official data early Wednesday indicating that the ruling National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, is set to form the next government.
