The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Bar Julius Abure, has been suspended for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities.

The Nation Newspaper reported that Abure’s suspension letter dated May 14, 2024, and another dated May 15, 2024, were approved by the LP State Executive Committee on Friday night in Benin.

Abure, who hails from Edo State, was suspended early last year by his ward executive in Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

In May of last year, a High Court in Edo State dismissed the suspension after Abure filed a suit challenging his removal.

However, the State Executive members have decided to revisit the issue, ratifying his ward’s decision to suspend him despite a court order.

On Friday, the State Executive Committee, led by Kelly Ogbaloi, endorsed the party’s ward and local government committees’ decisions.

According to Ogbaloi, the state executive council had no choice but to endorse the suspension, which was also approved by the party’s executive council in the state’s Esan North East local government area.

Mr Patrick Agbontaen, the party’s state deputy chairman, also stated that the party was fed up with the series of misdemeanour allegations levelled against the embattled national chairman and fully supported the decision to suspend him until further notice.

The ratification letter reads: “Here is forwarded to you and for your consideration the ratification of Julius Abure’s suspension from Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Ean North East LGA, Edo State.”

“The LGA Executive met on May 15, 2024, around noon, to consider the matters presented on the suspension and found them weighty, so the suspension was ratified and upheld.”
