A tragic sextortion case in Australia has led to the arrest of two men in Nigeria.

The teenage victim was reportedly tricked into sending explicit photos online. The perpetrator then threatened to expose these pictures unless the boy paid $500. Sadly, the boy died by suicide in 2023 due to the harassment.

Authorities in New South Wales launched an investigation, which later involved the state’s Cybercrime Squad. Through international collaboration with South African and Nigerian law enforcement, they were able to track the suspects to Nigeria.

Two Nigerian men were arrested and charged with sextortion offenses in March. Officials are confident they can be prosecuted locally in Nigeria for the Australian crime.

This case highlights the alarming rise in sextortion. Detective Superintendent Matthew Craft, head of the NSW Cybercrime Squad, urged young people to seek help if targeted. He emphasized the significant increase in sextortion cases and the importance of reporting them.

“We want young people to know they’re not alone,” he said. “Talking to the police is the right thing to do.”

The arrests demonstrate extensive police cooperation in combating this global issue. Both Australian and Nigerian authorities praised the international effort, highlighting the importance of collaboration in fighting online crime.
